Heating is political. Heating is complex. And heating is key to Europe’s climate goals. “Heat Pumps, Renewables & Other Hot Stuff” makes all of this visible – clear, well-researched, and visually striking.
Between data and debates, urban districts and heat networks, tech myths and political narratives, this book unfolds a panoramic view of Europe’s heating transition. Through illustrations, infographics, and storytelling, it invites readers across 68 pages to rediscover the most urgent – and most overlooked – dimension of the energy transition.
What does it mean when entire cities operate without fossil fuels? What does a smart, renewable heating network look like – and who benefits? What role do heat pumps really play, and what’s behind the common misconceptions?
This book is not a technical manual. Nor is it an activist’s playbook. It’s a visual compass for anyone interested in the future of heat – whether professionally, politically, or personally. With sharp design, vivid metaphors, and solid research, it captures the current debate, key technologies, policy frameworks, and social potential – in a format that invites both reflection and the occasional smile.
Europe’s blind spot in climate policy
Heating accounts for nearly half of Europe’s energy consumption – yet its decarbonisation still lags far behind electricity and mobility. In Germany, a heated political debate rages around supposed “boiler bans,” while at the EU level, the heating transition receives far too little attention.
This is where the project comes in: a colouring book designed to reach policymakers, NGOs, and industry associations – making a complex topic accessible and engaging. Unlike traditional materials, it aims to spark curiosity, stick in people’s minds, and clearly position heat pumps as a key technology for climate action.
From artefact to argument
The result is a 68-page infographic colouring book featuring 30 thematic double-page spreads that combine technical explanations, myth-busting, real-world examples, and future visions. Hand-drawn illustrations and the recurring character “Pumpi” help translate abstract concepts into relatable stories. A thermo-sensitive ink on the opening page reveals the inner workings of a heat pump when warmed.
The book functions as a stand-alone communication artefact – with individual spreads designed to be used in presentations. Its tactile quality and unexpected format deliberately break with conventional policy materials, offering a playful yet well-researched entry point into the heating transition.

The colouring book for grown-ups – as a communication strategy
A colouring book for adults creates a productive kind of disruption. This unexpected format sparks curiosity, leaves a lasting impression, and attracts positive attention. The act of colouring shifts how we engage with content: it slows us down, draws attention to details, and invites a more playful approach to complex topics.
Amid a sea of policy papers, this physical artefact becomes an icebreaker. In an age of digital overload, analogue objects have unmatched impact – you can hold them, flip through them, leave them lying on your desk, pass them on. You can’t just click them away.
Excitement for the energy transition
Heat Pumps, Renewables & Other Hot Stuff is, in a way, the sequel to our Infographic Energy Transition Coloring Book. Few of our projects have made waves quite like that evergreen publication – an innovative format that set new standards in science communication, won nearly every major infographic design award, and ended up in the hands of not just one, but two chancellors.
