Brand Development and Repositioning for Arge Gas Westfalen
Network Under Power: Reinventing a Utilities Alliance
Brand development and strategic repositioning for an alliance of 50+ municipal utilities

Arge Gas Westfalen faced a challenge: its name no longer matched its expanded scope of activities. But when more than 50 municipal utilities with different priorities need a shared identity, consensus can easily get lost in a jungle of stakeholders. Our rebrand navigated this complex landscape and, with “Arge Impulse”, created an identity that both excites internally and reflects the diversity of modern municipal-utility work – positioning the network as a driving force behind the energy transition.

The Challenge
Achieving More Together
In a time of fundamental upheaval, municipal utility companies face enormous challenges. The energy transition, digitalization, and new mobility concepts call for creative solutions – and above all, for exchange. This is exactly where Arge Impulse comes in: as a network of more than 50 municipal utilities, primarily from North Rhine-Westphalia, it offers a platform for knowledge transfer at both the leadership and specialist level. The name “Gas Westfalen” had long since stopped reflecting this broader role. A comprehensive rebrand was needed to reposition this community for its expanded mission.

Deliverables
Identity with Depth
Our rebrand of Arge Impulse encompassed a holistic identity concept. The logo we developed visualizes a cross-section through a city with its various layers of infrastructure: residential buildings, green sustainability elements, water supply, and underground utility lines. This depiction illustrates the diversity of modern municipal-utility work and anchors the organization in its civic mission. The completely redesigned website and network platform now enables effective knowledge exchange between members.

Learnings
Thematic Deep Dives
From Utility Provider to Driving Force: The Evolution of an Industry Identity
The transformation from “Arge Gas Westfalen” to “Arge Impulse” illustrates a paradigm shift in how municipal utility companies see themselves. Where the provision of a specific resource once took center stage, modern municipal utilities today define themselves as multifunctional problem-solvers for civic challenges – from energy supply to water management to digital infrastructure and mobility solutions. Our naming process reflected this development: “Impulse” captures the active, shaping role this network plays for its members and for society.

Design Processes with Multiple Stakeholders: Consensus as a Creative Catalyst
The particular challenge in this project lay in the complexity of the stakeholder field: dozens of managing directors, each with their own ideas and strong opinions. Rather than treating this as an obstacle, we developed a design process that turned this diversity into a strength. Through structured feedback loops and moderated development phases, we turned potential conflict into constructive tension. The result was a design concept that wasn't watered down by compromise, but instead gained depth and relevance through intensive exchange – a prime example of how design governance can enrich creative processes.

What the Project Achieves
Visible Transformation, Measurable Impact
The new visual identity of Arge Impulse allows members to position themselves as part of a forward-looking network. The clear visual language and the concise name strengthen both internal identification and external perception as a credible voice on energy-policy issues. The digital platform makes knowledge exchange easier and accelerates shared learning – especially valuable for smaller municipal utilities with limited resources. Members are now using the new identity as a springboard for their joint activities and have significantly increased their visibility within the industry. Arge Impulse has become living proof that shared learning and exchange drive the transformation of the municipal energy sector forward.
