Foresight Agency Berlin – Discourse Spaces, Participatory Futures & Future Workshops
Arguing about the future works wonderfully when there's a method to it
Ellery Studio develops discourse spaces and future workshops for organizations, cities, research projects, and transformation processes. We design formats for deliberative dialogue, where people can talk about possible futures, argue about them, sketch them out, and decide together.

Discourse spaces: What future dialogues can achieve with design
Bringing people to the table
Many questions about the future involve groups that rarely talk to each other. A good discourse space creates the setting for it: clearly prepared, well facilitated, and built around a task that gets the conversation moving.
The future you can touch
Speculative design and design fiction make possible developments tangible. Not as a PowerPoint, but as an object, scene, message, image, or prototype that gets people thinking and provokes real reactions.
Designing the debate
Design for Debate starts with an open question. From there, it needs friction, shifts in perspective, and a framework in which different positions are allowed to become visible.
Making participation easier
Not everyone enters a room with the same language, the same prior knowledge, or the same confidence. Good onboarding, clear materials, and accessibility are essential for getting into the conversation faster.
Capturing results
A discourse space doesn't end with the last contribution. Visualizations, written records, exhibitions, maps, or short results formats make sure the discussion can keep being put to use.

How Ellery Studio designs future dialogues
Speculative Design and Critical Design
The future as provocation, question, or invitation
Speculative design helps people talk about developments before they start to seem self-evident. An object from a possible future, a fictional service, or an unsettling everyday scene draws different reactions than a strategy paper does. Critical design starts where friction matters: questions of power, the consequences of technology, climate futures, societal role expectations, or new infrastructures.
Design Fiction
Fictional artifacts for real conversations
Design fiction works with things that could come from a possible future: newspaper pages, product packaging, policy memos, diary entries, interfaces, or services. Artifacts like these make assumptions visible. They show which future someone takes for granted and what consequences could follow. For research, strategy, and participation, this is often a very direct way in.
Future Workshops and Foresight Workshops
Draft, test, and sharpen together
Future workshops bring people with different perspectives into a structured process. We develop the flow, methods, materials, and facilitation for it. Depending on the goal, the focus is on critique, vision, scenarios, target visions, or first action steps. We know from experience: a good futures workshop doesn't need more methods. It needs the right transitions and good material.
Design for Debate
Formats for topics with tension
Some topics don't need consensus to get started. They need a good question worth arguing about. Design for Debate suits questions about the future where values, interests, or uncertainties collide. We design situations in which positions become visible without overheating the room. This works in exhibitions, workshops, events, and internal strategy processes.
Discourse Spaces for Cities and Regions
Urban futures, structural change, and public spaces
Urban development, regional transformation, and urban strategies need images, places, and occasions for conversation. In the Indeland region and in other structural change contexts, this translation is exactly what matters: the future becomes something people can experience spatially, socially, and politically. Discourse spaces help make different ideas of the city, landscape, work, and everyday life visible side by side.

Discourse Spaces for Companies and Organizations
Negotiating strategy, culture, and change together
Companies, too, need spaces where the future isn't just presented. Leadership, employees, specialist departments, and external partners each bring different pictures of change. We develop formats for strategy processes, organizational development, change programs, or internal communication. With visual materials, facilitated conversations, and results that stay in use after the session.

AI-Supported Future Dialogues
Future Booth, live visualization, and new forms of co-creation
With our Future Booth, we brought AI visualization into futures work very early on. At conferences, in ministries, and at international events, images emerge directly from conversations with experts and participants. The AI isn't a gimmick. It delivers material that groups can build on right away.

Our Services: Discourse Spaces, Participatory Futures & Future Workshops
Present and future at the same table
A good discourse space starts with the question of who should talk to each other, and what has been hard to talk about so far. After that, we develop the format, dramaturgy, methods, materials, and documentation. Depending on the project, that can be a workshop, exhibition, future workshop, participation format, or conference module.
