How we work

What makes our Foresight department special

We think about foresight from the application side. Scenarios make decisions easier, future visions open up discussions, and let people experience new ideas early on. To do this, our futures research team works closely with our own design team and our internationally award-winning infographics department.

Strategic foresight and design sit at the same table with us. Our design team translates complex developments into future visions, maps, artifacts, or prototypes. This makes scenarios easier to understand and lets them be used directly in strategy processes, workshops, or communication — without having to book an additional communications agency.
Futures Design

From the scenario back to today

We develop future scenarios with an eye on the decisions that need to be made today: which options stay worthwhile, where's an experiment worth the effort, what should be prepared for early? That's why our work doesn't end with the scenario report. With design futuring, speculative design, design fiction, and co-creation, we deliberately work with bold, current approaches to futures design that engage with complex, open questions. They help break out of habitual thinking patterns and make new options for action visible and testable early on.

Part of a strong foresight network

Ellery Studio is a partner of the Advanced Foresight Group, a network of specialized providers for strategic foresight. Depending on the question at hand, we can expand our team with the right specialist expertise. As a co-initiator of zukunftsforscherin.de, we also actively help shape the German foresight community and stay close to current methods, debates, and developments in the field.
Our International Network

We host Europe's largest community for speculative design and design fiction

With Speculative Futures Berlin, we helped build the international Speculative Futures community from the very beginning. Berlin was one of the first chapters of the Design Futures Initiative, and the first one outside the US. Today, the network has more than 80 chapters across every continent, and our Berlin chapter is among the largest and most active worldwide. We regularly bring the international community together at events and conferences.
Teaching & Research

We train the next generation of futuring talent

Our team includes a professorship and several teaching appointments. We teach futures research and futures design at the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Design and the Berlin School of Design and Communication. We also develop education and training formats with the Fulbright Community, the HPI School of Design Thinking, and for foresight teams within companies and organizations.
