Less weighs more: imagine your everyday life using only half as many resources. And still feeling better. That’s exactly the future Ellery Studio developed together with WWF Germany – with a communication concept, gallery walks, and participatory formats.
The Challenge
Between Tonnes and Dreams: Halving Resource Consumption by 2045
Germany faces an enormous challenge: resource consumption has to be cut in half by 2045 — from today's 16 tonnes down to 8 tonnes per person per year. Together with WWF Germany, Ellery Studio developed the communicative architecture for this transformation: narratives that make people want change, and formats that make abstract goals tangible.

From Narrative to Exhibit: A Coherent System for Communication
The result is a holistic system for communicating resource-light living. At its core is a communication concept built around a main narrative and five sub-narratives. It's flanked by immersive gallery walks, participatory formats, and a modular exhibition concept – developed hand in hand with science and civil society.

Communication Concept
A core strategic document built around the main narrative "Freedom Through Less," five sub-narratives (from redefining prosperity to generational responsibility), guiding principles, and three fully developed campaign ideas.

Gallery Walk 1 & 2
Two immersive exhibition formats featuring hands-on objects, self-reflection templates, and participatory stations. Together, the two walks created a narrative arc from the current state to a desirable future.

Exhibition Concept
A modular system with more than 20 exhibits across three size categories: small formats for workshops (e.g., story cubes, postcards), trade-fair formats, and a complete exhibition narrative for 150–200 m².

A six-part workshop series (three in-person, three online) featuring interactive formats: from persona development to city modeling to postcards from the future.

Narrative Development: When Reduction Sounds Like Gain
Sustainability often struggles with an image problem: it sounds like restriction. Like having to, not wanting to. The project flipped that logic. The main narrative we developed, "Freedom Through Less," reframes conserving resources as liberation: from excess, from dependencies, from social imbalance. Five sub-narratives make this vision concrete for different audiences – from the security-minded to innovation enthusiasts.
When the Future Becomes Tangible: Gallery Walks and Narrative Objects
Abstract numbers rarely motivate anyone. 16 tonnes of resource consumption? Hard to picture. The gallery walks made that scale visible, audible, tangible. Hands-on objects, self-reflection templates, and participatory stations ensured that participants weren't just informed, but genuinely moved. The dramaturgy of the two walks was key: the first confronted visitors with the current state, but through color-coding and positive signals, always also showed that change is possible. The second walk led straight into desirable futures – four walk-in mini-rooms for food, mobility, housing, and leisure made resource-light living concrete and desirable.
